The piano stays in service of the room rather than becoming the center of attention. Music begins quietly and adjusts naturally as guests arrive, conversations develop, and the feel of the event becomes clear.
At times the music may remain calm and spacious; at other moments it may gently build in response to what is happening.
I built my career around music and improvisation, beginning with five years on the main stage at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam. I later spent 15 years as the house pianist at The iO Theater in Chicago, performing seven nights a week. That background brings in-the-moment musical judgment to each event, allowing the music to respond naturally to the setting.
